Naval History Museum

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In the mainly maritime city that Venice used to be, a visit to the Naval History Museum is a must. Situated in a beautiful old part of what vas the Arsenal (naval shipyard), in the south-east of the Castello Sestiere, it displays many treasures coming from from Venice as well as many other parts of the world, from ancient to modern times.

Pink masks with sad faces...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Another pic made by Suzy, with these two pink masks with sad faces... Most of the costumes you can see during the carnival cost a lot and have sometimes needed mor than one year of work!

Carnevale...

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

I'm not that fond of the Carnival... A feeling that I'm proud to share with our dear Jean d'Ormesson, a true Venice lover himself, who, as far as I know, never goes to these kinds of delights! Anyway, it's carnival... so here is a picture that my friend Suzy made for us... and some more explanations by Lorenzo on his excellent Tramezzinimag!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In the south of the Castello Sestiere, this white construction, named Scuola grande San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, was founded during the 14th century by the Dalmates (or Dalmatians). It is one of the many brotherhood that Venice had by this time.

"Le Café", a nice little patisserie in a tiny street, right near Campo San Stefano. Perfect for a little treat on your way from Academia Bridge towards Piazza San Marco...

San Trovaso

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In a quiet area of the Dorsoduro Sestiere, San Trovaso stands between a large campo and the Rio di San Trovaso, right behind the Squero. The church was rebuilt in 1570, after a great blaze that burned the former one to the ground.

Little canal in Burano

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

In this island, that the poet Jean Cocteau called the "Crazy rainbow", things seem as small as they are colourful : narrow canals, tiny houses, little bridges... Island of fishermen, Burano has been famous from the 16th century with the art of lace : while their men were busy throwing their nets on the lagoon, the women would sit down on their doorstep, nimbly lacing their cotton thread.
