Com'era, dov'era

I'm sure you all know the story of the Campanile of San Marco. Some of you said you liked photos taken at night when I posted my first photo. So here is another. Doesn't it make you wish you were there, even if it is cold right now? How right Goethe was when he wrote, "Venedig nur mit sich selbst vergleichen kann." (Venice can only be compared with itself.)

Did they finally remove all the scaffolding and whatnot around it?

Elizabeth -- I just checked the webcam in the piazza, and the scaffolding is still there. It's not visible here because it's on the other side of the campanile.
Bert -- this is a great shot! And, yes, I get the reference: they rebuilt the campanile after it collapsed "as it was, where it was." (Ditto the Fenice, I believe.)

The photo was taken in September 2008. I think there was scaffolding and fencing around the base of the campanile then, but, as Alexa says, it would probably not be visible from this angle.

We spent some time at Christmas last trying to get any decent shots of the angels and snowflakes that were projected drifting across thecampanile at night - my camera really didn't want to know, and we were not at all satisfied with any of the shots. It was interesting, though, evening by evening watching the stage for the New Year Celebrations grow. It is a pity that there is so much scaffolding etc in St Mark's Square at present - glad to have seen it before there was so much, but I'm sure it's all doing a worthwhile job...

What a glowing scene, with a glowing quote to match. Thanks, Bert.

Beautiful, I could sit for hours in St. Mark's square and watch the people; watch the effect the changing light has on the mood of the place and the people. I have visited many places and I agree with Goethe. Thanks for sharing this beautiful imags.

I have just walked through St Marks and past the Campanile and it is very quiet, with much preparation for the Carnival. I think this has to be my favourite time of year to visit. Many fewer tourists than previous visits although you are right Bert - it is very cold. Lots of women wearing fur - and some men!
