La Pietà used to belong to the most renowned orphanage in Venice, established in 1346, "Il Pio Ospedale della Pietà". A place where the young boarders where mainly given a musical education.
During the 18th Century, under Antonio Vivaldi's leadership, concerts were given by the orphan girls choir, which attracted a great number of music-lovers from all over Europe.
The present building was built by Giorgio Massari from 1745 to 1760. The façade was completed during the first years of the 20th Century.

I love these stylish taxi boats...
The wooden brown ones are my favorites.
I recommend Vivaldi's Virgins, a story that takes place at that orphanage :)
Excellent book Ally
Thank you Ally. I'm going to order it immediately on Amazon...
Glad I could be of service :) Love the pics you post every day and I can hardly wait to be back in Venice next year, hopefully :)
Nice shot, Pierre! (I've read that book -- it IS good.)
A new book selection, a little history and of course a great photo.
Any books by Michelle Lovric are also an excellent read about our beloved city.
